How does the structure of La Haine convey some of the key messages and values of the film?

The structure of La Haine is split into two segregated parts one in the projects in Paris and the other in the Paris city centre. In these two separate parts of the film we discover as the audience a lot about the characters and the social and political implications throughout the film.

In the first part of the film it is set in the projects where the trio Vinz, Hubert and Said all live. The ironic fact about this is that the trio don't all meet the requirements of what the ideal Frenchmen would be - Vinz is a Frenchman however follows his religion of Jewish, Hubert is a black Frenchman, and Said is an Algerian Frenchman. This suggests to the audience that because the three of these men are all different and do not meet the ideal French citizen requirements that the projects is a place that is purposely meant for the containment of the non French. The projects ideally show the audience the separation in French society and how this has ultimately highlighted the exclusion of the trio and also shows the struggles in lack of employment and lack of education that these types of people from these certain areas are given in life. This is supported in one scene when the trio are all sat in a secluded area with a younger boy telling them a story - the story has no purpose to it and so this is almost a comparison to the trios actual lives - this is it for them their life is sitting around waiting for something interesting to happen because they have not been given the chance to prove that they are worthy of proper jobs in the big city purely because they are judged on by where they come from.

The projects is established as the centre of the trios universe - by using certain framing techniques the projects are presented to us as claustrophobic and make us feel trapped with no escape. This is what the framing does for the audience how this is the trios actual reality - there is no getting out of this universe for them because this is all they know. In some shots the director uses wide open spaces to show the characters sense of belonging and control in their own environment. These frames are shot in a series of tracking shots, steady cam and long takes to remind the audience of how the trio feel in their place of comfort. In one of the shots which was a long take it was the camera flying above the projects with a remix of two different songs playing - DJ Killa and Edith
