Since War of the Worlds was first released as a novel in 1898, the story has been remade and also re-imagined several times. All of the versions of War of the Worlds always have the aliens as the villains and at each different year of the film coming out again, the aliens all represent different meanings, for example, the 1938 version is an allegory of the fear of the rise of the Nazi party as at the beginning of the 1930s, fears of annihilation and 'alien invasion' grew in Europe and America. This soon returned again after the rise of the Nazi party as a radio show, presented by Orson Welles, which terrified millions and tapped in to the fear surrounding the rise of the Nazi Party.
A way in which this film can automatically add the themes of paranoia, fear and threat of annihilation is by transferring the film into a modern setting, in modern-society which can tap into existing anxieties.
Just as a novel itself, 'War of the Worlds' was also largely allegorical reflecting social trends and cultural attitudes of the time in which it was written in 1898, which was the fear of immigrants and 'End of the World' fears- which took place in Victoria England, which then was the modern times for when the book was written and to this day has been re-imagined.
The main themes however shown in all the original novel to the most recent re-make in 2005, are Paranoia, Fear of 'Others' and The Fear of Annihilation. These themes are shown due to the cultural issues at the times of each making of the texts (Novel, Radio, Films) such as 'End of the World' Fears, immigration fears, Nazi Party rising fears, the fear of world war, fear of Annihilation, fear of the USSR, fear of terror attacks and fear of government which is all paranoia. The Fear of 'Others' is presented through the way people felt threatened by the issues through out all texts. And finally, the Fear of Annihilation has been expressed through the fears of collapsing of the British empire, fear of world war two, fear of world war three and finally, the fear of future of terrorist attacks.
