Full Metal Jacket

The scene at which the soldiers are climbing all the obstacles, we learn that Pyle is physically as well as mentally holding everyone back. He is the slowest in the group and is unfit making him less able to complete the course. This can be seen through the camera angles and movement. When the soldiers are on screen, the camera is rigid and tracks from side to side. However, when we see Pyle, the camera is more hand held and free flowing, singling him out and making him seem more pathetic. At this point in the scene, the camera works to make sure the background and foreground are both in focus at the same time. From this we can see soldiers in the background are conforming to the military whilst in the foreground Pyle stands alone, almost like an outcast indicating that he shouldn't be in the marines and that he cannot conform with everyone else. This is Kubrick showing the difference between Pyle and the rest of the men. He is making him physically and mentally humiliated by not allowing him to align with the rest of the soldiers.
