"Box Office figures are falling"

Box Office figures are indeed falling due to many social, economic, cultural and cinematic reasons. Over the years there has been a decline in audience attendance which stemmed from after the second world war, when the globe struggled to gain a few pounds together. Recently, 2014 Box Office revenue hit its lowest point since 1995. As cinema got more expensive, audience declined contrasting along side it.

When attending cinema, instantly before engaging with the film, audiences are bombarded with advert after advert after warning before we have even engaged with the cinematic presentation. Audiences are being forced to arrive at times way before the actual film starts meaning that they are paying to be advertised to, this is something society are rejecting as a whole as we are seeing too many adverts on a daily basis. Theoretically, cinematic consumers are paying for more than they bargained for.  Even on television, apps and general use of the internet, we are seeing at least one product being advertised which is something nobody wants to see.

A decline in star power is explicit. now in franchises we want to see the story develop and want to see more and more content of it. In Star Wars The Force Awakens the two new main characters are were both unknown unheard actors who are now global superstars. However the story had to go on and star power was not a main factor. These actors were placed to establish their genre of film and their talent in Hollywood. Placing an actor such as Leonardo Di Caprio or Amanda Seyfried in a sci-fi film would be a wrong move as he is mainly seen in dramatic, bold roles.

Audiences are put off by the fact that there is such a "hidden cost" that is now starting to be exploited when attending the cinema. There are many external payments that have to be done now before even partaking with the film. There has been an increase in now snacks being taken in that is not really needed and now parking/transport can set people back maybe £10+ just for watching a couple of hours of content. Ticket sales are also on the increase as they seem to increase year by year. In 1995 ticket sales for an adult ticket was £3, now fast forward towards 2015 it now costs £11 for a singular adult ticket just to watch a film. This has now led people to wit for the DVD release as that is the same price for a DVD is when it is newly released. Now more and more people can enjoy and consume to film just for the price of one ticket. It is now working out cheaper to wait for its public release. In 2014 1.26billions consumers bought tickets in 2014. This is the lowest since 1995.

Between 2014-2015, a new trend that caught on like a rash was introduced, "Binge Watching" was used heavily by TV and the increase in streaming site such as netflixs.

  • audiences could watch more hours of content of their fav genres
  • it was much cheaper for much more content
  • t was instant
  • consumed in comfort of their own homes
