Clockwork Orange scene analysis

Alex in custody
Alex is presented to us with a cut on his nose, covered up by a bandage and plasters. This is used to encourage the spectator to sympathise for Alex as he has been injured and is surrounded by people that the spectator is shown to be dangerous for Alex. There is a high angle close up of Alex on the floor covered in blood and slouched against the wall, this shows the spectator that he has been attacked and that he is vulnerable. This is done to make the spectator sympathise with Alex and therefore align themselves with him. There is a P.O.V from Alex’s perspective; the men in the room are shot from a low angle to make them appear to be superior to Alex. This further reinforces Alex’s vulnerability and encourages sympathy from the spectator towards Alex.  Alex says, “I am not so bad, I was lead on by the treachery of others”, Alex does this in order to make himself appear to have been manipulated and therefore more vulnerable.  A police officer throws paper towels onto Alex instead of simply giving them to him; this is to show that they have no sympathy for him and that in their eyes he is worthless. Alex is spat on by one of the men in the room; this man was earlier shown to be an ally to Alex. This presents Alex without anyone to support him anymore and therefore makes him more vulnerable.

Alex in the car

·     Alex is put to one side of the car while the other Droogs are placed on the other side, this is to single him out and put the focus on him
·     During the close up of the other Droogs they are yelling while Alex is silent, this is to show that he is different to the other Droogs and the spectator is encourage align with him unlike the other Droogs

·     We are given a P.O.V several times from Alex’s perspective while driving, this is to encourage the spectator to align themselves with Alex by getting his point of view.
