What dose social
media provide for audiences and produces?
Social
media sites such as YouTube allow people to upload original films, which can be
shown to a global audience. This means that filmmakers get the chance to use
the Internet to show their talents in filmmaking and it also give produces a
change to identify future filmmakers. A good example of this would be the film
Pixels, in 2010 the short movie Pixels was uploaded to YouTube since it had
been uploaded the company Sony spotted it and since then it has been developed
into a full length film with an all star cast.
Other sites such as KickStarter allows filmmakers to upload their films
to the site with an amount of money that they need to produce the film, if they
get enough supporters and reach their target then their short film will get
made into a full length film. Site like
this gives the audience a say in what types of films they want to see produces.
It also allows fir produces to see what types of films the audience wants to
see made into full-length films.
Social
media sites also help to market the film to the audience, by doing this they
can target the key audience on any type of social media network. The audience
can also gain access to free types of content; a good example of this would be
Avatar. The fans of the movie where able to receive the original soundtrack for
the Avatar film for free if they re-tweeted for Avatar. This is not only
beneficial for the fans of the film but it also helps to promote the film and
receive more views of the film. The other reason why this helps to market the
film is because the soundtrack is free, people like free stuff whether they are
a fan or not, so if more people re-tweet that means that there will be more
marketing for the film.
Social
media sites are the best way to get exclusive information about the film as
well as the fact a number of people can upload the film trailer. A good example
of this is the force awakens trailer, when it was first uploaded it received 30
million views in the first 24 hours of the trailer being released and became
one of the most viewed trailers of 2015. By uploading the trailer to a social
media site such as YouTube it gives the audience the fist impressions of the
film, and allows them to decide if they want to go and see the film. Too add to
this people who use social media are more likely to go to the cinema five times
more per year then the average filmgoer. This proves that the use of social
media sites helps make the film do better at the box office.
Another
film that had benefited from social media is The Hunger Games. They used social media to promote the film by
using it fan-base to communicate and promote the film through types of social
media sites such as twitter and Facebook. They also got the fans of the movie
to engage with it, as the fans would be given different roles in the virtual
world of The Capitol. By doing this it gave fans the change to become familiar
with the world and the character of the film. By doing this they made a bond
between the fans, which set them up for the next, two films.
Social
media is not always a good thing. For example spoilers about the movie can
become leaked online. This can cause the film to have falling rates at the box
office and can also have an effect on the audience’s expectation of the film.
Trailers can also have an effect on the audience’s expectations of the film; a
good example of this is the Batman VS Superman trailer. The reviled too much of
the film and that meant that the audience had a clear idea of what was going to
happen in the film.
