What function does Edna serve in the narrative of the film ?
Throughout the film Edna is briefly Jack's Landlady and provides him with food, drink, and sexual pleasure but can also be viewed as an Independent at first, which is a new gender role. However when Jacks is involved with her , her independence is diminished.
The scene I am analysing is when Carter returns from chasing a man who tried to kill. Edna at first refuses Carter to enter her house, however he ignores her and walks into the house anyway. Carter is clearly disregarding Edna's wishing and her house but does not seem the least bit phased about it.
She is then ordered by him to make him and the men he is with a cup of tea. This shows how Carter views Edna, he views Edna as a domestic person who should wait on him and provide him with whatever he wants. Edna refuses to make them a cup of tea but he tells her he that she will. He then comments that she can 'watch' after she makes them it. This suggests that Carter just sees Edna as somebody who he can order around and can be rewarded if she is done as she is told.
