Edna in the film is the only independent woman we see. She owns her own business and doesn't see mo have any woman/man in her life. She is solo in society. Her function in the film is to essentially serve a safe house along with hospitality for Jack. She is shown in her own home and business that when a man enters, it becomes his world. She throws threats at Jack that she will call the police because of the trouble he has caused, however they are dismissed. his shows that
in the 70s, post liberation of women, still had more work to achieve they status in society they deserve. It was not an over night thing. Jack treats edna with no respect, this presents an ideology that white heterosexual males in the 70s though that women were definitely lower than men on some scale they created themselves. The ideology is mainstream n society.
Jack and Edna both sleep together, applying they theory from Mulvey that women are just erotic objects in films as they are shown serving sexual behaviour for the men.
