The North is represented as dangerous, neglected and industrial. We can see this throughout the film but especially in three scenes: The Train scene, The Bar scene and the Marching Band scene.
The Train
On the train we see Carter take some drugs, he takes speed or acid in the bathroom and then he goes to the dining room and takes some pills. This shows the direct fallout of the swinging 60s liberation of drugs and that there is a drug problem in the UK. While in the sitting area Carter is reading a book while everyone else is reading a newspaper. You don't need a high level of education to read a newspaper so this shows that the north are less educated than the south. This also makes Carter feel more intelligent and sophisticated than everyone else. This is a visual signifier of the North/South divide which is a major theme in the film.
