Representation of Men in Get Carter
Women as Victims
Almost all of the women in Get Carter are portrayed as victims of both men and society. The scene that presents this is most is the scene with Carter and Margaret outside of Kinear's house during his party. Carter holds a gun up to Margaret's head and demands she remove her clothes. Carter makes Margaret do this to sexualise Margaret, he then gives her a heroin overdose. This is key as it links to the looser attitudes to drugs during the 70's, this is a backlash from the 1960's. Margaret is depicted as a victim in this film as her sexuality is exploited by Kinear in order for him to get to Frank. Kinear is able to use Margaret this way because of the release of the contraceptive pill to unmarried women, Kinear is able to make Margaret a prostitute.
Carter forces Margaret to remove her clothes before he kills her, this is done for both Carter and the audience; we see Margaret as a sexual being because her body is well lit but her face remains in the dark. This means that the audience can only see her body and not her facial expression, being able to see her face would of allowed for empathy, something Carter doesn't feel. Margaret is a victim because she is controlled by men and is eventually overpowered and killed by a man.
