The scene opens with an extreme closeup of her lips, they twitch nervously introducing her anxiety and close examination of her Physical appearance. Madeline's appearance is an important element of the film because this is what Scotty sees her as, just a face and body, he obsesses over her appearance. In this shot she is clearly on edge and not comfortable with the viewers close scrutiny, it is an extremely voyeuristic shot. The camera then pans upwards to an extreme close up of Madeline's eyes, the extreme close up introduces more conventions of the thriller genre such as anxiety paranoia. The mood is the shifted when a red tint is added to a Extreme close up of one of madalines eyes, the eye reinforces the idea of 'gazing' and introduces the theme of identity.  Her identity is unstable and her her internal worings of her psychology are visually signified through a mix of live action, colour change and vertical graphics. Te series of geometric shapes appear to come form a distance and the full screen- when one disappears another takes place.
