Scottie is constantly
emasculated throughout this scene. For example Scottie is positioned in a
female role, specifically damsel in distress; he falls theatrically off a chair
into midge’s arms. He also wears a corset, which is a feminine article of clothing;
it represents how he has been castrated by his acrophobia.
He is a very childish character: he doesn’t know what a bra is so midge has to
explain it to him much like a mother giving a child the birds and the bees
talk, she patronises him by calling him a
“big boy” which points out how his masculinity has been taken from him.
Midge questions Scottie about his future, which is also a motherly role. Midge
is positioned in a masculine role for example, she rejects Scottie which shows
her being in control of their relationship status, it is also mentioned how she
is the one who called off the engagement. She is employed where as Scottie is
not which is a complete reverse of the gender roles expected at the time. Midge
is also quite clearly the mother figure, which is why she is not sexualised,
there is never a point of view shot of midge, and she also wears neutral
colours which do not draw any attention to her.
