In the opening sequence of 'Get Carter', Jack Carter is travelling to Newcastle. Through the eyes of Carter, we see the area become more dull and Grim, this connotes that he is travelling to a location that is 'lesser' to the City of London. As Carter's train approaches the station the surrounding city is industrial and grey looking. This high contrast of different cities suggests that the people of London see the people of Newcastle as working class and lower status. However in the opening sequence of 'Bullet Boy', as Wisdom is driving to pick up Ricky they enter the Bright countryside of London. This reflects the positive side of London, the peaceful area that has not been affected by the violent generations of the people. As the threesome re-enter the city centre of London, the location transforms into a industrial, residential area though it is bright, colourful and welcoming. This shows a very family orientated city.

A key theme and message in the film 'Get Carter' is Female Liberation. The contraceptive pill gave the women a chance to take control and have a choice whether they want children or not, however men used this to their advantage and this is presented in the film. 'Get Carter' presents Female liberation as a myth. This is reflected when Jack carter enters Ednas B&B. Due to Edna being a liberated women, owning her own business and being free from a mans hand, the traditional gender roles are put in place. though Edna owns the building, as soon as Jack enters she does as he says. He immediately takes owner of the house as he is the only male present. Telling Edna what to do, and she follows. When Edna pleas that she will phone the police, "I'll call the police" Carter responds with "no you won't". this demanding language connotes that though Edna does not want to comply, she has too in fear that Jack Carter with resort to violence in order to get what he wants.
Female liberation is also questioned when Carter makes the remark "I know you're wearing purple underwear". This shocks Edna as she knows she has to comply. This is because Edna is a liberated women, she has her own opinions and is free from men. Carter knowing her underwear colour connotes that he can tell others. Doing so would result in Edna no longer being liberated and branded a 'whore' due to having sex out of wedlock. This means that in order for him not to speak out, she has to have sex with him. she is forced as she has no other choice but to comply to him or be judged by her neighbour who is a traditionalist.

during the pick up of ricky in BB family and loyalty sre introduced as major themes. Ricky teaches curtis to spy on his girlfriend as its for family. This reinforces the idea that family are for life and come first. Though curtis is younger he still respects and looks after his older brother. This is because when curtis grows up he knows its inevitable that he will take over Ricky's job in looking after his family. The two are framed in a two shot, this reinforces that the brothers are close and will look after each other. Curtis is positioned in the same way as his brother. This reveals the similarity between the two, also as ricky is smoking a cigarette while curtis is playing with a piece of grass. The piece of grass represents not only the cigarette but also foreshadows Curtis future.
