Films based on games and how they did at the box office.
Prince of Persia - Sands of time (2010) - This film this action adventure fantasy film had a budget of $200,000,000 which seemed like a lot of money for a film such as this. At a 6.6 star rating on the internet movie database it wasnt a massive hit but certainly wasnt a flop. This film seemed to get good reviews with one reviewer saying "if you want to take a little escape from reality, go back in time to 'Prince of Persia' and enjoy. Its fun and easy on the brain." Although this film earned a profit with bringing in a total gross of $335,154,64 on the opening weekend it brought it a worrying and very disappointing $1,371,066. From personal experience this was badly distributed and advertised as i cannot remember seeing many of this film at all, maybe one or two of the same poster but that was all.
Silent Hill (2006) - This horror film that was based on the popular video game which was about the same popularity as Prince of Persia seemed to do well too but only got an Internet movie database rating of 6.5. The budget of this film was $50,000,000 and ended up grossing $97,607453 worldwide while grossing $20,152,598 on the opening weekend on 2926 screens. A review for this read "In the end, I think this is quality horror entertainment and probably one of the better game-to-film adaptations, abut it is much too chaotic - too many monsters and too often and too clearly to be frightening. The mood and atmosphere are what is frightening and so it should have been used even more in Silent Hill, but instead the director feels pressured to introduce creatures to satisfy mainstream audiences' need for bloody gorefest and kinetic action."
Gaming and the film world.
In the past 10 years we have seen the world of gaming and film combine forces as two mass medias to try and create a film that creates mass popularity within both the film and gaming world. Films such as the ones i have mentioned above have tried this and succeded but yet never really got off the ground and made a mass popularity and nothing very special, this is the same with many films based on games at this moment in time bar a few but i believe in the next few years some massive announcements may become very big within the film and gaming world. One of these being the Metal Gear film which was announced by Hideo Kojima last year as he admits that all his games in the Metal Gear Franchise had been film influenced as he had been a film student previously and was also planing to go into the film industry and not the gaming. Throughout the Metal Gear solid series there have been iconic film figures and influences throughout and heres how it all came about to become one of the biggest and most popular game series and what i believe will become a massive film too.
