Today’s post 9/11 society is similar to that of 1950s in a
way of constant paranoia lingering in the citizens due to fear of an outside
threat. In 1950s it was the fear of communists taken over and having the
accusation of being a communist without fair judgement and in today’s society
we have the fear of another terrorist attack following the attack on the World
Trade Center.
Another similarity in both societies is that of both
freedoms and liberties being taken away in contradiction to America’s traditional
ideology, which includes the freedom of speech and the right to fair trials.
This is due to the intense fear of annihilation and constant threat of outsiders
infiltrating the society. In today’s society we have the Patriots Act, which
gives government access to everyone’s privacy, this increases the sense of paranoia,
as the people within the society know they are always being watched. In the
1950s though, people were arrested without right to a fair trail and proper
evidence to prove them guilty, both of these go against laws of privacy and
right to a fair judgement and everyone’s privacy was restricted.
