War of The Worlds: Post 9/11 Society

In what ways does World of The Worlds comment upon post 9/11 society?

Spielberg uses iconography from the 9/11 attacks, this is so links are made between the audience and the events in the film and a more intense sense of realism can be established. This is so more fear is generated and we can connect more to the movie. Examples of allegory in the film that denote with 9/11 can be the fact that Spielberg elects to use grey smoke and ash when the people are hit by the laser beams coming from the tripods, associating with the fire that started in the towers after the planes hit and also the cloud of dust that was sent through New York streets after they came down. There is a also a tracking shot in which the camera moves towards a handheld camera that has been dropped on the floor, signifying how most footage we have of the 9/11 attacks are from people who were on the streets at the time and recording with their personal camcorders. This also means that we mostly see the towers from a low angle point of view and looking up at the towers similar to how the tripods in War of The Worlds were also frequently seen from the streets and not above or on the same level as them. This makes a visual connection between the real footage and the film. Another significant example of allegory in the film was how the people ran down the street and away from the tripods, similar to how people ran down the streets from the falling towers. Spielberg did this so that we would feel the terror more strongly and be able to relate more considering the events of 9/11 happened in our lifetimes.
An important piece of iconography in the film is the scene in which Ray comes out of the house and finds that a plane has crash landed right on the doorstep, an obvious reference to the planes that were crashed into the towers and comments upon how we now see planes as weapons. This mirrors how the aliens in WOTW also used transport as a form of weapon and were mainly able to annihilate because of their ability to move around so quickly and also the size of their tripods. Another example of what links terrorists and aliens could be how they aim to replace our ideologies with their own - terrorists with their religion and the aliens sprayed a red substance over everything which suggests that they were planning to inhabit the planet themselves. This plays on our fear of annihilation and the unknown and also the fear of technology and threats from outsiders which are all themes that can be found throughout the films and also denote again with 9/11.
Paranoia can be associated with post 9/11 society because people become much more aware and afraid of terrorist attacks, which no one knew when they were going to happen next or what amount of damage it was going to cause. The character Ogilvy was used to represent this paranoia. He was reminiscent of conspiracy theories and claimed that aliens had been on the earth with the humans for a long time, without us knowing about it. His paranoia gets the best of him and he acts more radically and becomes a danger to the people around him, eventually leading to his murder. Spielberg uses Ogilvy to recognise the conspiracy theories that surround the 9/11 attacks and therefore, more links are made between the film and the real life events.
