The first in the Cornetto trilogy brought Shaun of the Dead. Described as a 'rom-zom-com' it opened the door to many comedy/horror movies such as Tucker and Dale vs Evil which crosses movie stereotypes with genuine humour. Made in 2004, it cost £4,000,000 to make and earned $30,039,392 worldwide.
Shaun of the Dead (written by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright) was written as a homage to George Romero's 'Dawn of the Dead'. Pegg plays 'Shaun' the main character who faces many struggles throughout the movie. The biggest of these being the rise of the zombie apocalypse. At the start of the movie Shaun's girlfriend of 3 years Liz (played by Kate Ashfield) breaks up with him because of their boring life together. Irony strikes when the next day their lives are changed for good. Throughout the movie Shaun tries to make up for the fact he has been such an awful boyfriend by becoming the group 'leader' and attempts to find them safety... In the Winchester pub.
The cast includes many Spaced actors such as Nick Frost (Ed), Jessica Stevenson (Yvonne), Julia Deakin (Yvonne's mum) and Peter Serafinowicz (Pete). This is because Spaced was directed by Wright and written by Pegg and Stevenson.
Overall the I think the movie was portrayed and edited to perfection. I particulaly enjoy the way Wright uses short bursts of film such as the toilet scene to show time going by. Wright also commented that he used that method as a tribute to 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'. I would give Shaun of the Dead 4/5 mainly because even though the movie is among one of my favourites I still think there's room for improvement in the horror department.
