Wayne's World Film Review

Wayne’s World Film Review
Director Penelope Spheeris’ film ‘Wayne’s World’ looks into the life of 2 teenage boys from Aurora, Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey), and their friends during the 90’s. These boys are just average teenagers who host a cable access show, Wayne’s World, on Cable 10, go clubbing in the Gasworks and spend their days in Stan Makita’s Donuts or driving around in the Mirth Mobile whilst listening to the Bohemian Rhapsody. The boys live a fairly normal life until an unexpected visitor, Benjamin (Rob Lowe), offers the boys a $10,000 contract with producer, Russell Finley (Kurt Fuller) and a huge sponsorship opportunity with Noah Vanderhoff (Brian Doyle-Murray) – the owner of Noah’s Arcade. Unfortunately, the fame gets the better of Wayne and he ends up losing his show, his best friend and his girlfriend Cassandra (Tia Carrere), but of course it ends with a ‘mega happy ending’ when Wayne gets his show back and Cassandra is noticed by Frankie Sharp (Frank DiLeo) and receives a contract with Sharp Records.
Wayne’s World would not be what it is without the amazing Mike Myers playing Wayne; he makes the film fun to watch and really shows how a confident, outgoing 90’s teenager would act. Dana Carvey does the job of making sure Garth is the complete opposite of Wayne – shy with a lack of confidence and not much to say- and he does this job very well. Another main character in this film is Cassandra, Wayne’s Girlfriend, played by Tia Carrere. Tia makes it clear at the beginning of the film that Cassandra has no interest in Wayne at first and shows a clear contrast with how close she becomes to Wayne at the end; she also shows how Cassandra does this with Benjamin and makes Wayne extremely jealous.
In my opinion, I think Wayne’s World is very good at grabbing attention and keeping eyes stuck to the screen as the characters make a strong relationship with the audience, they do this by speaking to the audience sometimes rather than to each other for example in Stan Makita’s Donut’s, the manager (Glen played by Ed O’Neill) steals Wayne and Garth’s spotlight by talking to the camera when Wayne interrupts with ‘Hel-lo! What do you think you’re doing? Only me and Garth get to talk to the camera’ whilst looking into the camera and addressing the audience. Moreover, the film grabs audience attention as it has star appearances such as Alice Cooper. I also think Wayne’s World is very likeable and is a film that is easy to remember as it has many memorable, random quotes such as ‘shwing!’ and ‘party on’. This film is very comical and the words on the cover of the video/DVD ‘You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll hurl’ are most definitely true.
There are not many negatives to Wayne’s World however something I would have to point out is how the film drags on the ending a lot. At the end of this film, there are 3 different endings (the sad ending, the Scooby Doo ending and the mega happy ending) which are played one after the other; although this makes Wayne’s World original, it can also have the negative effect of starting to bore the audience and making them become easily distracted at the end of the film which is supposed to be the most important part.
In conclusion, I think that Wayne’s World is a very comical, random film which can attract and entertain many different audiences. Some people may say that this film isn’t very clear if the viewer doesn’t understand or listen to rock music such as Alice Cooper however I think that the film is enjoyable for everyone and is a great watch. After watching Wayne’s World, you will most certainly want to watch the sequel, Wayne’s World 2, where Wayne puts on his concert- Wayne Stock- and ‘You’ll laugh again! You’ll cry again!! You’ll hurl again!!!’

  1. A good review that follows the guide well. You have provided a clear synopsis of the film and even mention some criticisms of the films finale. However a little more critical analysis of the film would have improved the work a small amount. Overall this is a good review!
