How Important Are Stars To Audiences and Producers?
Stars are certainly a big significance to attracting an extensive audience to the film. It is very important to make the film appeal to the audience because without one, the film and the producers won't make any money. The stars are valuable as they have created fan bases for themselves that vary in size - fan bases are essential because however bad the film is, the producers will still gain some money because the individuals in the fan base will go see the film to see their favourite star; so stars can be used as safety and they also give a sense of security to the film producers.
Stars are important to audiences and producers as a capital value, as a construct, as a deviant, and as a cultural value. They are important as a capital value because if the star is constantly in the media, whether it is good or bad, it will lead people to go see the films that they are in; so films with stars in them will make more money than films without, as the stars add monetary value to the film. Robert Downey Jr. is a popular film star that I am using as an example, he has created his own personal persona from the highly popular Iron Man franchise, he represents himself as being cool and sarcastic - he has become the character Tony Stark in real life. Robert Downey Jr. is seen as attractive which is probably one of the main reasons he has gained publicity and created a fan base for himself. The film would gain more money if a star such as Robert Downey Jr. is in it; because of his past and bad reputation in the media, and because of the advertisements such as the HTC phone. Stars will bring capital value by doing interviews, photo shoots, and making the news.
Stars are important as a construct because audiences want to know the real person behind the film screen. How film stars present themselves and act is important as it can help the audience distinguish and place them in certain categories and genres - so stars have to choose their films wisely if they want a positive reaction from the audience because they have to have their expectations met. This also helps producers to cast a star right for the role and character.
They are also important as a deviant because film stars who show that they have a wild side in society would get more media attention. This adds to the audiences' interest because it allows us to identify with the star. Whatever they are in the news for, whether it is good or bad, it may make the audience like or dislike them more - giving the film that they are currently in more profit and attention because we would like to see what they act like professionally.
Stars are important as a cultural value to audiences and producers because in their films they can represent what society should be like. Film stars are shown as being superior as opposed to average individuals; people will look up to stars because they dream of having that celebrity lifestyle - this causes people to mimic their lives. This causes people to change their behaviour. Audiences can also identify and relate with the star if they represent a ideology in their films.
