During ‘Home Invasion’ how is spectator
implicit in the attack?
The spectator is implicit in the attack by
being denied a point of view of the women during the attack and being placed
far away from her. We also align with the group during this. We are also placed
far away from Alex as he is the one committing the violence and also has a mask
on so we don’t see his face during the attack, if we did I think that the
spectator would dislike Ale and stop aligning with him.
The spectator is implicit by using the male
gaze by making us take pleasure in the images of the women. The woman is denied a view in this scene and
is passive. The older man with the older woman is seen as a male’s ideal
relationship, and we don’t walk out or stop watching this because we see the
images of the women from the droogs ideology.
During the treatment scene how is the
spectator punished?
The spectator is punished by aligning with
Alex is the Ludivico treatment. As Alex watches the movies at first he doesn’t
feel any effect, but as the treatment goes on he begins to nauseate, and more
shots are of the shots are more of ale rather than the screen as it was at
first, making is challenging to watch Alex because we are aligned with him and
feel sorry because of his lack of freedom.
The demonstration scene turns the
punishment again and makes us feel sympathy and the choking makes it
uncomfortable to watch a he is shot in close up. As the naked women is standing
in front of Alex she is shot in a low angle shot from Alex’s point of view, we
almost want Alex to touch her through the alignment with him but as he tries he
begins to choke, and this then makes us feel sympathy because he has lost his
freedom.
During the finale, how are both Alex and
the spectator rewarded?
In the end scene we feel good that Alex is
raping the women because he has his freedom, the scene that makes us feel good
for Alex is the Ludivico treatment, we feel uncomfortable watching him suffer
to the treatment and when we see the last shot we feel relieved almost like he
is re-cured.
The spectator should feel terrible because
Alex is committing all ultraviolent acts but we are denied POV from the victims
and we are denied alignment with Alex during the acts by using camera and masks
to distance Alex’s face so we feel good when there is a new equilibrium.
