During the treatment scene, how is the spectator punished?

During the interrogation scene, Alex is punished in order for his treatment to take an effect, but this also punishes the spectator in a variety of ways. As it begins Alex is initially enjoying the video, but as he begins to fall ill, he loses enjoyment and enthusiasm wants to be released. This also punishes the spectator in a similar way. As spectators tend enjoy A Clockwork Orange during the violent scenes which we are implicit in, the video Alex is forced to watch is similar to the spectators encounter. However as Alex begins to feel sick what we begin to see more often is Alex feeling sick and in pain, rather than the video he watches. Due to our allegiance given to Alex, we feel Alex’s pain as we empathise with him. Being forced to watch this means the spectator is punished for enjoying Alex’s crimes and punished for the earlier voyeurism. Both Alex and the spectator are denied the pleasure of watching the video, Alex because he falls ill and the spectator because we are forced to watch Alex rather than the images themselves. The only other male spectators, the doctors, are able to enjoy the images without punishment, whilst we are forced to see Ale, with whom we have aligned with, cause us to sympathize with him and feel just as uncomfortable as he does.
