Get Carter - Men, Women and Location

Representations of Men & Women

Throughout the film Get Carter, Men are represented as the Stronger of the two genders, both physically and mentally. They are seen as forceful and dominant, where as Women are seen as Emotionally Weak, domesticated and Powerless against Men. This can be reinforced by various scenes, one being when Carter charges into a Edna home with a hostage, she demands to be informed of the situation then threatens to call the Police. Carter then says to her "No you wont" and then tells her that she can know whats going on only if she serves the Men with Tea. This is a prime example on how Women are seen as servants towards Men and definitely second class citizens. This shows that Men automatically assume control of a home, and they are feared by Women. Another examples of Men's power is when Carter walks into a betting shop, leads a man to the back then stabs him twice and kills him, not caring about the consequences.

In the film, Women are sexually objectified. They are looked at as objects of sex and pleasure and nothing more. Carter has sex with various women in the film, then when they inevitably die he just watches, making no attempt to save them, they just get used and discarded. They are also very passive, and are practically just walked over by Men. And example of this is when, after sex, Carter picks Glenda out of a bath by her neck and she just accepts it and makes no attempt to struggle. Throughout the film, any Women that make an attempt to stop a man or halt his progress in his 'Revenge via killing spree' will more likely end up dead.

Representation of Newcastle & 'The North'

'It's grimm up North' is the expression that best suites this film, even from the very start of the film we can see the South's view of the North when on the train journey....
