Representation of Men
In Get Carter the men are the main protagonists and the more
active characters that drive the plot and create the most action. They are
presented as sleazy and vulgar as shown in an earlier scene of a group of the
men watching porn and making comments whilst smoking and drinking. Carter is a cold-blooded killer, which could
be a representation of men in 70s being aggressive and ruthless without any
remorse of their actions
The males are more dominant in the film and are shown over
powering and being possessive of women. This is shown through the demand for
sexual pleasure and the pleasure of killing somebody as Carter does throughout
the film.
Representation of Women
Women in Get Carter are not treated like people at all and
instead they are objectified as sexual objects that can easily be disposed of
without guilt or regret. They are passive characters that are used for the
pleasure of men rather than a purpose to drive the plot. Glenda is thrown into
the boot of a car and the car is then thrown into the river where Carter shows
no sign of mercy or any emotion for that matter. This reinforces the fact that
women are not cared for or are recognized for anything other than their bodies
and use for sexual pleasure.
