Representation Of Men

The film Get Carter gives the audience one interpretation of Britain, Newcastle specifically in the 1970’s, a decade after the hyped up female movement of the 60’s. This film aims to show the true effects of this movement and how it wasn’t very god at all.

The representation of men is very clear in this film as it gives basically one view of men and hardly ever varies. Men is this film all fall under the categorisation of ‘sleazy’ and ‘aggressive’. From the very first scene we see that the males in this film aren’t the most respectful due to the fact that they collectively watch images of naked woman participating in sexual acts. Not only so these men watch these images with another clearly uncomfortable woman in the room, but they also proceed to make highly objectifying comments towards the women and also making advances to the woman in the room with no remorse to how uncomfortable she appears to be. The rest of the movie also reinforces the aggressive nature of the men as hey spend the entirety of it being rude to each other and attempting to kill each other with no remorse. The only time Jack shows any genuine emotion is when he is watching the adult film witch features his niece.

The women in this film are also terribly represented and are heavily mistreated throughout. They are reduced to nothing but housemaids and seductive distractions. The most prominent case of women being reduced to less than they are is when the woman who Carter is residing with for the time being gets continually bossed around by him with hardly any objections.
