Representation
of Men
In the film of
‘Get Carter’ men are viewed and represented as active. This means that they
move the storyline and the narrative along. This is shown that almost every
male character serves some significance to the story, affecting its progress in
one way or another. Men were also shown
to be vulgar as they are shown to only think about sex and business (but mostly
sex).
Men are also shown to be
represented as being controlling over women. This shown through sexualisation
as well as simple orders or commands. One of the scenes where the commanding of
women is shown is during the scene with the phone call between Jack Carter and
Anna – the girlfriend of Gerald. Even during such intimate moments as this, he
is taking control of her, telling her what to do and when to do it, giving her
no room for argument or reconsidering. A non-sexual moment where Carter
controls a woman is when Edna threatens to call the police and Carter simply
says ‘No you won’t. I know you won’t.’ this shows the power and control that
men seemed to have in this time.
Representation
of Women
Women are
represented as sex symbols in the film and very submissive to men. One scene in
which this is prominent is the first scene in which a group of men are looking
through a slideshow of pornography. This on its own degrades women and treats
them as objects but the fact that women are there with them also degrades them
as they are being treated as objects and being teased and asked if they could
perform the ‘tricks’ that the women are performing in the pictures.
