Richard Dyer, a British writer and film expert is the author of the article i will be focusing on that tackles the subject of the representation of gays in media, my focus will be put on representation in contemporary media but I will also make comparisons to old cinema.
The article begins by stressing how many problematic occurrences happen in queer films but get bypassed by the gay community simply due to the fact the most would prefer representation at any cost, rather than none at all. 'Problematic' can range fro turning gay characters into the antagonists to forcing gay characters to behave in a way that is the ideologies of a straight man, or as Richard Dyer puts it 'sexual ideology that has anti-gayness as one of its cornerstones'.
