When deciding what to write my post on, I wanted to make sure it was on a subject that I had previously thought long and hard about myself and that I had my own opinions toward. Upon seeing an article named 'Fear and Loathing on Brokeback Mountain', it sparked my interest enough to read on and discover open critiques about the film.
The Article was written by Craig Snyder, an openly gay man who saw Brokeback Mountain in the cinema when it first came out. I thought it would be interesting to see the opinion of a gay man on one of the most critically acclaimed gay love stories in modern day cinema and get a sense of whether the gay community appreciated this film or not.
The article basically goes step-by-step through the film analysing the important scenes and highlighting the feelings he had at the time, starting from when he first enters the cinema to when he walked out.
He first compares walking into the cinema to entering a video store at age 23 to rent My Own Private Idaho on DVD, a film the explores the friendship between a gay man and a straight man that takes place in the film, he describes the paranoia he felt as a closeted gay man, "I was convinced that everyone in the store would know that I was gay simply because of the choice of film I was renting."
