Star Theory: Background Information and Justification

Star Theory: What is it?

The article I used for research on “Star Studies” was written by a group of film studiers/theorists (the names have not been given). The article gives the reader(s) the ability to learn both the basics and intermediate details on Star Theory.

The section of the article I will be discussing is section 1 (Star Studies: Mapping Out the field of star scholarship within film studies).

The first thing the article states is that “film stars attract attention” and that “they play a seminal role in the production and marketing of movies”. An example of this would be the 2014 film "Maleficent"  (a remake of the 1959 Disney film "Sleeping Beauty", however this adaption focuses on the main villain  and shows the audience her story) starring Angelina Jolie as the titular character "Maleficent".

The film itself proves that stars themselves can be a deciding factor in a films success or failure, this is because the film was highly advertised as being "Angelina Jolie's return to the silver-screen" some say because of Angelina's casting the film beat its opening weekend predicted intake of $70,000,000.

Within the article numerous references to Richard Dyer (a British academic who currently holds a professorship in Film Studies at the "Kings College" in London. Part of the article talked about Dyer's 1978 article Heavenly Bodies: Film Stars and Society. In the article Dyer talks about how stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland are perceived as "icons" in the gay community.

An example of a celebrity who would be considered a "gay icon" in todays society would be Sir Ian McKellan, this is because although he is a homosexual, Sir Ian is highly active in the movement of gay rights and is often seen participating in anti-homophobic marches and some could even say that he breaks all homosexual stereotypes through his portrayal of Gandalf the Grey/White (Lord of the Rings) and Magneto (main villain from X-Men).
