Boogie Nights

Boogie nights analysis

This scene starts off with 3 friends in a car. Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg), Reed Rothchild (John.C.Riley) and Todd Parker (Thomas Jane).as they leave the car to go buy some drugs, it's a shaky hand cam, with a tracking shot. this is to make us feel like part of the group and to make us feel nervous like the characters. however only Dirk and Reed seem to be anxious, as Todd has a gun, but is totally calm about the situation, almost as if he had done it before.

When they get to the door, we zoom in on Todd's hand as he pushes the door bell. This is diagetic as it is in the movie world. the sound of the bell is loud and it echoes, this demonstrates the silence and tension, as though the bell signifies the calm before the storm. We then see the assistant of the drug dealer let them into the house, and as they walk pat the camera we zoom in on the gate close behind them. this is the suggest no escape. The lack of sound also reinforces the idea of the calm before the storm.

W enter the room with the characters and see the drug dealer (Alfred Molina) dancing to music in a bathrobe and underwear.
