Jake Roach, boogie nights

Boogie nights
In the scene from boogie nights, the three characters are about to meet a drug lord and sell him their drugs, right before they go into his house one of them pulls a gun from their pocket and tells his two friends, this makes the other two feel very unsettled and they begin to fidget and panic which makes us as the audience feel nervous because it signifies that something could go wrong.

Every couple of seconds firecrackers go off behind the characters and they jump and panic, this emphasises the characters worry and how scared that they are and because there is no pattern or rhythm to the sound it makes us panic every time we hear it because we cant make out what it is straight away and throws us off guard.

The diegetic sound coming from Todd’s speakers makes the characters feel uncomfortable because it is that loud it is distracting the three men from everything that’s going on and every time the characters seem to re-focus the noise of the firecrackers goes off and throws the characters off again. This creates tension and emphasises how the characters are panicking and left alone with their own thoughts.

When the characters do speak in this scene the sound is sometimes hard to understand because the music is playing so loud and this creates a sense of chaos and uncertainty for us and the characters because they start to fidget and panic and don’t know how to react to the loud noises and each time a firecracker goes off it sounds like someone is being shot so we are waiting for the moment when somebody does get shot because as the audience we know that they both have guns.
