The Godfather Analysis

In the Godfather sound is used in different ways. During the scene sound builds up and builds up until Michael kills Solozo, this is used to indicate to the audience that the shooting is close to happening.  The non-digetic sound of a train pulling into a station is used to represent Michaels feelings and emotions towards the current situation that is unfolding, for example when Michael goes into the toilet to get his gun the sound is low and slow paced, but as he goes to leave the bathroom with the gun to shoot Solozo the sound  of the train pulling into the station increases and gains pace and entirely drowns out any other sound, this is used to create tension and reflect Michael's nervousness and his fear of killing.

During the scene lack of sound and complete silence is also used, this is used to restrict any information from the audience and to create a feel of awkwardness and to exaggerate the hostility in the scene. During the scene Michael and Solozo speak italian to each other but there is no subtitles, this is used to create secrecy and to exclude the audience.
