Boogie Nights analysis

When the trio enters the drug dealer's house, we instantly get low-key lighting to assist the smoke within the room and the loud music and sudden bang of firecrackers are all used to make us feel like we're there. The usage of the firecrackers is a constant reminder of the gun in Dirk's pocket as if it were firing spontaneously and to no specific rhythm, this is also used to put us on edge and be alert throughout the whole scene.

The music's representation is diegetic and it also shows the house owner's mood, very slowed down and relaxed as well as having a good time smoking. More often than most, the dialogue is drowned out by the music and the firecracker sound effects except for certain words to help us pick up on what's going on throughout the inaudible conversations between the trio.

There are many occasional close ups of the three on the couch to represent our closeness with them and in contrast we're never truly receiving a close up of the drug dealer so we don't form a connection with him.
