Micro - Elements

Micro-elements:
Camera and Mise-en-scene

In the first half of the film I took the colour out  and made it monotone in order to show how her life is. It represents that her life is black and which and is very negative. It is uninviting and pessimistic and this is shown through the close up when we hear her parents arguing. I have used a variety of long shots and wide shots so she doesn't fill the frame. I did this on purpose in order to show that she is empty and is always fleeing. It shows that she doesn't live a happy, full-filling life. I have blurred out the camera when she is shot in a close up to portray that her life is a blur and is out of control, it is very distraughtful. Throughout the first half, I have shot her to be fragmented in order to show that I have taken ideas and inspiration from other films due to this being such a common techniqiue used.

Taking inspiration from Alice In Wonderland (AIW), one minute and fifty seconds into the video we decided to saturate the colours more in order to make the setting seem unnatural and different to any other place. I used a canted angle as well as a high angle of her laying down on the ground because we wanted to show that she has woken up somewhere completely out of it such as 'limbo' and is no longer alive. I used a medium close up as we wanted to show the emotions such as confusion on her face, as well as the clothing she is wearing. We chose to keep the character in the same costume she was in, in the start of the film, this is because wanted her to be confused about where she was and how she got there. By keeping her in the same clothes, she doesn't understand that she's dead or what's going on. We came up with the idea for this film as I have a love for Alice In Wonderland and wanted to do something out of the ordinary, however, my partners wanted to do a film about something they thought would intrigue the audience so we decided to do both. By placing her in a 'world' where everything is vibrant and divergent but leaves the audience asking questions we could all work together.

The close up used on her face after she stands up portrays her fear and confusion which is exactly what we wanted. The idea was for the audience to sympathise with her but to also guess what was going to happen next. In Alice In Wonderland, she often walks around quite lost and dazed, so we had her walking around through the forest to create this sort of scene and atmosphere. The character motivations were being developed as in this part of the film, we can see her eagerness unfolding as she makes her way through the bushes, as shown by the point of view shot. The sound also portrays her eagerness as the tempo increases when she gets further and further in. The setting of the woods was purposely used due to AIW but also because the woods is a lonely, isolated place, representing her feelings.

The medium close up of her in high saturation then goes to a long shot in monotone as it shows the past events and we wanted to show the audience that she has found her way back and is watching and realising that she is dead.  A close up of her feet walking to the edge of the water was purposely used to create suspense as it harmonizes with the tempo of the music and they work well together. The camera then cuts away to a medium close up were her feelings are showed and she is coming to terms with what's going to happen.  The camera is in high saturation at this point in order to show past and present events. We wanted to keep the past 'Georgia' in monotone as you associate death with dull colours such as black and grey. The camera is then faded out in order to show that all the pieces of the film are coming together and are making sense. The screen is blacked out to show time has moved on and everything is over. We decided to use a rose as prop to connect the whole film together and to bring it to a end.
