Throughout the first half of the film, Kubrick manipulates us to aid us in alignment with Alex, this is done through a through key scenes.
The first scene of the film aligns us with Alex straight away with the first shot being an extreme close up of Alex. In combination with the tracking shot which continuously has Alex positioned in the centre of the frame, we are encouraged to align with him and he nominates himself to be our guide to the world, translating for us and helping us understand.
In the car scene, the alignment is strengthened very subtly. In every shot of both Alex and the droogs, Alex makes eye contact with the spectator. We also have an ECU of Alex whilst he is driving, and he is staring straight through the screen at the spectator. When we get a POV shot, it is always on the right hand side of the car, where Alex is sat, and although at first we see this possibly as a POV of the others, this is most definitely Alex's POV. We only see his and the droogs' reaction to almost running people over and we never see the victims POV. This is a constant theme throughout the film because is we saw the attacks and violence from the victims POV, we would feel like the victim and this breaks alignment with Alex. The main point of the car scene is to show the techniques Kubrick used are constantly being used and are prominent throughout.
In the attack scene, the group wear masks, straight away disassociating Alex with violence and keeping our allegiance safe from breaking. The scene creates a bigger divide between Alex and the violence. We experience the act of rape through Alex's POV and never the victim. This is because if we experience the other side of it, and Alex is the one making us the victim. We break any connection and see him for the horror he is, but because we see it through his eyes, and from his point of view, in combination with the fact he has the mask on, we don't associate him with the act his is committing and we keep our allegiance through the seen and leave it still aligned with him.
