Analysis of The Opening Scenes of ACWO

'A Clockwork Orange': Opening Scene Analysis

The film opens with a disorienting simplistic red and blue screen with simplistic white font. The scene begins with an extreme close-up of Alex, to show that there is clearly two sides to his personality Kubrick chose to have half of his appear clean but the other is significantly different by having him wear fake eyelashes. The two sides of his personality are: the normal, kind Alex and the other is the murderous rapist capable of committing atrocious acts. We are encouraged to align with Alex because he is making direct eye contact with each viewer and acts as their guide in this unfamiliar dystopian society. Alex also takes the form of our leader and uses our human instinct against us as we are naturally inclined to follow leaders, he does this by branding himself as the most important person in the room "it was me, Alex and my droogs". We are also shown Alex's thoughts on women as we immediately see him resting feet on a table in the shape of a woman in an explicit position: this shows the audience that Alex views women as objects for his own personal use.

The second scene I will be analysing is the second scene were Alex and his droogs attack a homeless man. We are shown an immediate close-up of the homeless mans empty bottles of alcohol, he is signing an Irish shanty, through narration Alex brands him a "filthy old drunkie", we are then shown the
