How are we forced to align with the character of Alex
From the beginning of the film we are forced to align with the character of Alex in many ways. Through the use of shots types, his framing and his actions and dialogue. A perfect example of how are made to align with him is the introduction of the film. This is where we see Alex and his "Droogs" drinking in a milk bar. Alex narrates what is happening in the scene and introduces us into the world we are in. This is a very subtle way to get us to align with Alex, this is because we know nothing of the world we have been introduced to which means that him being our 'guide' comforts us and makes us align with him as he is helping us understand the unfamiliar. Another way in which Alex introduces us to the world is through the language used, he explains that they are drinking "Meloco" due to us having no idea what this is he then further explains that it is a milk based drink with some form of drug in it. Helping us understand the language and the world around us is a perfect way to get us to align with him. Alex also very quickly establishes himself as the leader of the group, he says, "There was me, that is Alex ... and my three droogs." This tells us that Alex believes himself to have power of the others as he is superior to them. The fact that he calls them droogs and does not start by introducing them with their names tells us that they may be somewhat useless to Alex and that he merely associates with them so that he can feel and have power over someone.
