Vertigo - Madeleine and the Male Gaze

The scene begins with a medium close up of scottie. it then pans right scanning the room before settling on madeleine. This represents Scotties gaze as he scans the room. Both scottie and the spectator are being drawn to madeleine, creating a visual link between them. We do not look away because scottie literally take his eyes off madeleine. the camera to drawn to madeleine in a tracking shot. as the camera begins to slow track forwards, a violin non-diegetic music starts up. this creates an ambiance of passion and romance around madeleine. Our attention is also drawn to madeleine through her attire. her green dress and blonde hair stand out from the dark hair and drab dresses of the other patrons. The green colour of her dress connotes Jealousy, envy and gives her an etherial presence. Since we can see her back it gives us the opportunity to view her as an erotic object and gaze at her without fear of being caught. upon seeing her Scottie straightens his back showing how overwhelmed  and intrigued he is.
