The two American films that I have studied are 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' and 'War Of The Worlds'. War of the worlds can be considered a post 9/11 cinema due to the allegories within the film and Steven Spielberg saying that '9/11 set the tone'. There are many ways within the film that show its true intention such as aliens which are an allegory for the Islamic terror that place and the trauma caused by it. Invasion of the body snatchers is about communism and McCarthyism in America in the 1950's. It is about how people were too scared to stand up for themselves so followed society and supported McCarthy in his ways that were wrong.
The final scene of War Of The Worlds shows Ray and Rachael making their way back to New York to find their families, this is symbolic for the families that lost people during the 9/11 attacks and for the families finding each other after it. During their trip back to New York, they see the tripods slowly terminate around them. This represents the shock and astonishment that people felt after it was over .
The final scene of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is when we see Miles finally reaching the authorities which is the police man and the doctor, whom at the start of the film had believed he had lost his mind. This changes when miles starts telling them what happened and he is interrupted due to someone confirming miles' statements. The film then ends with a close up of miles but there is no real resolution to the film. This is because the film was based off McCarthyism and within the years it was made, McCarthyism was still an ongoing problem. This is also shown by the closing scene returning to the opening scene showing that the problem was ongoing like a cycle. This signifies that no one can escape the threat faced by McCarthy unless they become fully aware of the issue and try to stop it together.
