Blade Runner Opening review

The opening of Blade Runner starts with a wide shot of the future Los Angeles. In this shot the future is represented as hell. This includes the explosions, which give the audience a negative view of this world as fire connotes danger ,death and hell, but also the lack of greenery. The lack of greenery and light hints that an environmental catastrophe has occurred, but also shows the advanced technology. For example, the flying cars that appear a couple of times in the opening. This shows that in this world the industry dominates.

The wide shot of the future world represents the audience point of view, with the camera moving slowly, it gives the audience the sense that they are being drawn into this world. The camera is slowly making its way towards two huge pyramid shaped buildings. These buildings suggest that they are dominating this world and look quite powerful. The involvement of these buildings in the opening shot highlights that these will be quite significant in the film.

The shot then moves to an cut in, extreme close up of somebody's eye. The eyes's of a person are normally described as the window to the soul, the fact that we can see this world in the persons eye connotes danger but also adds to the mystery of who this person is as the opening shot doesn't provide us with their identity.

The music in the opening shot is quite unsettling and is mostly electronic which confirms that this film is in the sci-fi genre.
