Blade Runner- Opening Sequence

Blade Runner- Opening Sequence

In the establishing shot straight away there is explosions and fire; this indicates that it is a dangerous environment where lots of death and misery occurs. And within this hellish environment there is a lack of any sense of greenery, this indicates that possibly industry has taken over as the movie is set in the year 2019. Within the establishing shot the camera is unfixed and is dolly in (moving forwards), the shot is actually a wide shot and this acts like a P.O.V (point of view) for the audience and they are drawn into this strange and unusual world slowly.
The music in the opening shot is eerie although has a sense of mystery about it with a electronic vibe, this electronic theme goes n throughout the scene and reinforces this idea of the future. There is a moment in the opening scene that leads me to believe that the opening is a P.O.V I believe because there is an ECU (extreme close up) of someone’s eye and you can see the reflection of the explosions we seen previously.
The cut in of the persons eye is used to show this idea of mystery again because you never find out who the person actually is in the ECU, I also believe due to this the theme of identity comes around and this theme goes one through the entirety of the plot line. People say that the eye is the window to the soul and this is apparent within this ECU because the cyborg within the movie just wants to become human and have a soul.

This is considered one of the most thought provoking opening sequences since not only does it introduce you to this unfamiliar place it sets the scene for the entirety of the plot. This is done via the synthesised sounds and generally synthesised theme to the movie with the futuristic vibe and lack of any plant life or even sunlight. This lets the audience know that something has occurred, something big to remove any sense of human or plant life.
