Blade Runner: Analysis

Blade Runner: Analysis

The opening scene of Blade Runner begins with a rolling text that gives you a preview of the event. During the rolling text part there is an eerie sci-fi song playing in the background. The director does this to build suspense for the next scene. Towards the end of this scene, there appears to be a cut in of an eye, which is an extreme close up. The eye also suggests that it is the window to the soul meaning identity.

The following scene starts off with a wide shot view/POV as the camera is always moving. The director does this as we (the audience) are drawn to what is seen as a significant place. The world itself is an environmental catastrophe due to it looking dull, dangerous and a fiery hazard. The fire also signifies death; this could be seen as foreshadowing.  The world also gives off a futuristic vibe with flying cars everywhere and lack of greenery. This shows that the industry dominates the environment.

Towards the end there appears to be a man standing alone in this ‘significant’ place. That appears to look like pyramids. This builds tension due to not knowing who the mysterious man/thing is.

  • ·       We learn that this man/thing is mysterious and doesn’t want to be known yet.
