Blade Runner Analysis

The scene starts with an establishing shot, it shows Los Angeles in the year 2019 and it looks like hell. There are explosions everywhere and the sky is black. The shot used is a wide shot and it is slowly moving forward towards a pyramid. The pyramid dominates the environment; this shows that it is significant and very important in the film and to the environment. This is also a P.O.V. shot as it is acting as the audience’s eyes and they are getting drawn into this unfamiliar world. The world is futuristic because there are flying cars, which shows that the world is advanced in technology. However, there has been an environmental catastrophe as there are no trees or green anywhere, there is just red and black. This also shows that the world is like hell. There is a cut-in extreme close up of an eye; in the eye you can see reflections of explosions. We don’t know whom the eye belongs to which shows that there is mystery in the film but also the theme of identity as the eye is the window to the soul. There is also a wide shot of a building with flying cars going into it. This shows that the building is important to the story. The music used is very eerie and unsettling, it is also electronic which indicates the genre of Sci-fi.
