Blade Runner

The opening scene of Blade runner depicts the world as being futuristic and in a state of hell. It is evident that there has been and environmental catastrophe so that the only lighting we seen are dark and dim. The establishing shot is a wide shot which gives us a full picture of the world they are living in and that the industry has dominated all the natural life. This shot also helps us as it gives us an insight to what the world has became and that it is now dangerous and violent due to the explosions. After this it cuts in to an image of a person’s eye, this is also an extreme close up which is good at it isolates the person and takes away their identity. The eye also symbolises the window of the soul but because we do not know the person we can’t seen into their soul to begin to know them. In addition to this it also creates a level of mystery and intensity as you can see the explosions happening through the persons eye.

After this the camera moves into a P.O.V shot so it seems as if the audience is there and are included in the film, the camera also slowly draws the consumer in as it is constantly moving to different parts of the world. However the camera is always drawn to a significant place to the movie this is the pyramid, this gives the idea that it is an important aspect to the movie and that it is dominating the whole environment.

The use of music in this scene is very unsettling and electronic giving the idea of a sci-fi, also the use of CGI gives it the futuristic and sci-fi feel. Overall the music to this is very intense and gives it the very mysterious and intense atmosphere that the images are showing too. The futuristic idea comes across very well as it is enforced by the flying cars and the fact there is nothing natural left there it is all electronic and computerised.
