Lord of the Rings:
Fellowship of the Ring Analysis
The scene I will be analysing
is the scene when the Ring Wraith is searching for Frodo and the other Hobbits
and they are hiding under a tree.
It starts off with a wide
shot of the Hobbits hiding under the tree and then the camera moves into a low
angle shot, this makes us feel like the Hobbits are trapped and isolated. Also
so that we can see how big the Ring Wraith is. The next shot is a close up of
Frodo. This shot is also a low angle. This makes us feel like Frodo is isolated
from the other Hobbits as he is the main target. The next shot is an extreme
close up of Frodo’s eye looking through a hole in the tree. The director took
up most of the screen just showing a tree and a tiny part of the screen shows
Frodo’s eye. This is to show that he is close to danger and that he is trapped.
The tree also acts as Frodo’s only protection from the Ring Wraith. The angle
that is used is a high angle shot to make Frodo look weak and helpless.
The next shot is a cut in and
is also a P.O.V. because it is what Frodo is seeing though the hole in the tree.
The shot shows the horse’s feet and nose and then cuts back to the feet when
the Ring Wraith jumps off the horse. It makes a loud noise because of the
armour but it emphasises his power. The next shot is a low angle and it shows
the Ring Wraith looking over the tree with the Hobbits underneath hoping that
they don’t get caught. This shows that the Hobbits are trapped and have nowhere
to go, this increases the tension. There is also juxtaposition because the Ring
Wraith corrupts the trees behind it to make them look dead.
The next shot is a high
angle, medium shot of the Ring Wraith’s hand next to Frodo’s head. This shows
that the Ring Wraith is close to Frodo now and tension is increasing again. The
Ring Wraith’s hand is dominating the screen and it is sharp and black to show
its evil. The next shot is a close up of the Ring Wraith’s hand and you can see
the reptilian design to show that it is evil; it also shows that he is
unnatural. Insects start to pour out of the tree; this shows that the Ring
Wraith is corrupting the environment around it. They are also used to show
fear, as insects are a universal fear that many people have. The next shot is a close up of Frodo’s face as
the ring is starting to take him over. The next shot is an extreme close of
Frodo’s fingers as the ring is forcing him to put it on show the Ring Wraith
will find him, this shows the rings power and how it has a powerful mind of it
own. It also shows that Frodo is struggling to stay in control of his body. The
next shot is a cut in shot of the horse’s eye. It is red to show that it is
also evil. Then the shot cuts in to show the Ring Wraiths hooded face, you can’t
see his face, this is makes him look like the Grim Reaper as he is also a
bringer of death.
