Analysis of Hubert scene & DJ scene

When we see Hubert walk into his house, we see that he has at least 4 siblings and another on the way, This is a cultural signifier  the African art on the walls reinforces this. The fact that this is cultural thing works to help the arrogent racists that don't know it to be cultural. Helene Carrere D'Encausse, said that all black people in france are Polygamous, and can't control themselves and that's why there is so many," she used this cultural signifier/ stereotype to try and support her racism.

We see Hubert wrapping up marajuana in his bedroom, this is so he can make money. We know that Hubert isn't a drug dealer, as he used to have his own gym, that got burnt down due to racial prejudice, so crime is all that he can turn to for money. We se flowers on his bedroom wall, suggesting that he either still shares a room with his older sister or used to share a room with her. The Posters on the wall are that of Tommie Smith and John Carlos, (American Gold medal winners) as they are giving the Black Panther salute. This shows that Huberts rejects French culture as these are his heroes and they are american, plus the heroes in the poster reject American culture, which helps him associate with them more. He is listening to Isaac Hayes, an African American soul singer, the diegetic use of this song shows another adoption of a surrogate culture, further reinforcing that Hubert, and the citizens in the projects disregard French Culture.

When we view Hubert, he is shot from a low angle close up, this is so that the audience can associate with him, and understand Hubert a lot more in the scene, as Hubert is the audiences way of understanding the projects. Hubert is the most aware of his situation in French society, and we can see that in the following scene.

We can se that Hubert is the most aware of his situation, as when he looks out the window, down onto the people in the projects, all he sees are citizens, that looked trapped in a zoo, like in the media scene. the reason that it is a P.O.V from Hubert is so the audience can realise that he is not like the rest of them. He knows his position in society, but he sees himself as separate from everyone else, because they are arrogent of their position; this is reinforced by the fact we see Said and Vinz walk past his P.O.V, as they too are arrogent, and Hubert sees them the same as everyone else. Hubert is the only one who wants a better life for himself, as he knows the life he has is terrible, but Hubert knows that he can't change his life and is unable to escape. This is reinforced by the shot of Hubert in the window, as he is tightly framed, and looks physically unable to escape.

As the scene progresses Hubert looks up and we see a DJ, The DJ is the only one framed differently from everyone else, and is shown to be different; this is a subtle statement, that the only way out of the projects to change your life, is through sport (as most French athletes are from the projects) or music. The DJ will change his life because as soon as the music starts playing the camera becomes almost surreal, almost dream like, this could be seen as two ways. One being that the DJ is in a world of his own, and the camera represents him day dreaming, or two, the camera could represent that the DJ is the only  one who will leave the projects, as the camera floats away into the distance. The DJ is wearing a Cyprus Hill T-shirt, this is a Latino band, once again showing an adoption of surrogate culture. The music he mixes together are "DJ Killa's - Sound of the police" and "Edith Piaf's - non je ne regrette rien" he mixes these together to show the blatant disregard of French Culture. As the Camera drifts away into the sky, we see the entirety of the projects. It looks maze like, and like a barren wasteland, thus reinforcing Huberts thought that the projects is inescapable.
