In the scene when Hubert is in his bedroom we see him shot
from a low level shot and positioned in the foreground, this positions the
audience very close to Hubert. This shows he is important and also allows the
audience to understand the projects through Hubert. In Hubert’s bedroom there
are many posters around, one of them being an image of African American
athletes called Tommie Smith and John Carlos. This demonstrates surrogate
culture and shows how these athletes are a symbol of hope for Hubert as they
both are part of places that see them as ‘others’ but Tommie overcame this. We
see Hubert preparing and smoking drugs, this represents that it is the only way
he can get money for his family. It also suggests that he has nothing else to
do, as he has no job.
Hubert’s POV demonstrates how he sees the environment, this
being a vast mix of non-white people. Hubert is most aware of his position in
French society as he sees the projects for what they really are. However, Vinz
and Said are oblivious and still lack awareness, which gives a unique insight
in to the mind of the trio.
During this scene we see DJ Killa using his decks to blast
out anti-police messages. The music DJ Killa plays is a mix of French music and
hip hop which shows he’s trying to create his own unique identity. When the
camera leaves the DJ it is not stable which suggests the environment is
unstable. This part is filmed by a remote control helicopter which adds a shaky
cam effect which gives a sense of realism.
