A Clockwork Orange - Tramp beating sequence analysis
This scene opens with a shot of bottles of booze next to a man lying down, the camera then reveals the man to be a tramp singing. At this point Alex's narration comes in again. He explains that he can't stand people like the drunk tramp, he views them as a drain on society. The spectator is encouraged to share this ideology with Alex. We literally view the tramp from Alex's perspective. We see the cane pointing down into the tramps stomach as if we were Alex ourselves. We then see an extreme close up of Alex's face, which is the side without makeup, making him appear to be less threatening. However, once Alex decides to attack the tramp, the spectator is forced to view the assault from a wide shot. This distances us from Alex when he is committing violent acts, meaning that the audience do not associate Alex directly with the violence ensuring that the connection between protagonist and audience is not broken. We do not see Alex's face during the violence, alls we can see is four silhouettes attacking someone, Alex is indistinguishable from anyone else in this shot.
