A clockwork orange: With reference to the films you have studied for this topic, explore some of the techniques that are particularly powerful in triggering an emotional response in the spectator.

Kubrick uses non-diegetic sound, "thieving magpie", perhaps to reinforce the idea of the theft of valuable possessions. Plus the playful music diminishes the realism of the scene. Victims of the road rage are withheld identification on the dark road and we hear laughter from the 'droogs' over the image. Most shots are from Alex's point of view, establishing a bond between Alex and the spectator. The camera singles Alex out by focusing on him and removes the other characters from the frame, encouraging the spectator to look at Alex only. When Alex looks into the camera his narration plays over it, further creating allegiance with the spectator. This also serves the function of preparing us for the upcoming 'ultra violence' so we will be less shocked and applauded by Alex's actions. Additionally, the narration provides us with an insight into his motivation for his anti-social behaviour.
