How important are social networks to producers and audiences as a form of film promotion?

Social networks are important to producers as gives them a potentially huge audience. It also is a more accurate view of audiences responses. For example a user uploaded a short film called Pixels which became very popular therefore inspired a feature film starring Adam Sandler. A film can be marketed on social media successfully just by having a twitter page, sharing trailers and teasers however sometimes producers can be more creative with this form of promotion. The title character from Ted had his own twitter page which posted lines of dialogue from the film. This created hype among fans as it  personally engaged with the audience. Audiences now use social media to watch new trailers instead of going to the cinema. This is because its quicker, free and its also instantly accessible as they can pick the trailer they want to see.Social media is a mainstream form of communication now. We can also re-watch and share trailers.
The Force Awakens holds the record for the most trailer views in 24 hours which is 30.6 million views. Sharing is a contribution to viral marketing. It is also important to add that critical reception is now less important as people would listen to the opinion of their friends and family rather over others. Youtube is one of the most popular social media sites. Amateur film makers can upload their own films, and trailers and teasers from popular films are also uploaded.
