Get Carter - Women as Victims

In the film 'Get Carter' we see the representation of men is that they are superior to women and use them for their own benefit. This is clearly shown through the character of Margaret, first of all she is used by Kinnear because of her sexual freedom and the ability to get a hold of the contraceptive pill. She is then used by Frank, Jacks brother which then leads to his death. We then see how Carter treats and victimises her with the scene where he holds her at gun point and takes her out to the woods and forces her to undress. Through not having any choice of what she is doing because of the pressure from Carter her sexuality is being dictated by a man. She has no sexual freedom as this is being forced on her, this is also contradicting her liberation as a man is dictating this situation giving her no choice. It is also clear victimisation as she is being abused by a man for something she did while taking orders from another man, clearly showing she has no control and her liberation is being disregarded by the men around her, clearly being victimised at all angles. Taking away her sexual freedom, liberation and power, her life and death are both dictated by men.

We also see the character of Doreen abused and victimised by men in the film during the scene where Carter sees the sex film she is forced into. This is men abusing their power and victimising women as Doreen is a young woman being forced into something sexual which she should really have her own choice over as sexual freedom is something women were granted with their liberation and the release of the contraceptive pill. But this is abused by men as they use this to their advantage as they know she cant get pregnant so they can use her for their film without any major consequences. She is lured in by Anna who is under the orders of a man, this just goes to show the power of men in the film, Kinnear has power over two women through his manipulation of one. Also in this scene we see Carters reaction to seeing the film. He goes and forces Anna under the water in the bath and throws her around like a rag doll, this is another example of women being victimised by men as Anna is being punished and abused by Carter because of something she did through the orders of another man who is abusing his dominant power over her, another example of a woman in get Carter being abused and victimised by men from all angles.
